Honey Extraction Day and Overwintering Information
***Saturday, 9/21/2019***
Greetings, Beekeeps!
Combining extraction day with hands-on overwintering demos. Both will take place on Saturday, 9/21, at Joel and Mary Lantz’s place. 192 Kunde Rd., Skandia, MI, 49885
EXTRACTION
Call or text Michelle at 906-250-2511 for a time slot AND let her know the number of frames that you have. DO NOT EMAIL; CALL OR TEXT ONLY, PLEASE.
Everyone is welcome to come out for extraction day! (The smell is wonderful!) Extraction will take place from 8am to 7pm. 6pm is the latest start time.
You can extract your frames for free. We only ask that you bring a small jar to fill with honey and leave it to be auctioned off in the future.
**Remember there are no fees for club membership; the honey from extraction and other donated items that are auctioned off at a fall meeting. Proceeds pay for our supplies, rentals, and other club needs.**
- Get your extraction time slot from Michelle (call or text – no e-mails, please).
- On 9/20, the day before extraction, feel free to bring your frames to Joel's to warm up - the fires will be stoked. Warm honey flows best. (Drop off any time. If no one is in the shop, just leave your frames there. Probably good to put your name on your boxes.)
During Extraction Day, Isaac Behrens will be doing two overwintering demos. 10am for the first demo, then repeated at 3pm. (No need to reserve a time – just show up!) He’ll show how to insulate, proper ventilation for winter, and where to put a sugar board. Probably some more tips, too! The demos will take place at Joel’s, probably right outside of the extraction building.
Honey extraction and overwintering, all in one great day! Joel’s already put in an order for a nice, sunny, fall day! Hope to see you there!
.........................................................................
Sat May 18th at 1pm, with a rain-date set for Sunday May 19th at 1pm, 2 hr long splits class. Class is $10, limited to 15 people signed up. I'll also teach another splits class on Sat June 22nd at 1pm before the bee social. Taught by Isaac Behrens, Isaac Behrens fell into beekeeping by apprenticing for a year from Kirk Webster, a commercial beekeeper in the Champlain Valley of Vermont. Since then, he has been spending his spare time building equipment and splitting his colonies to grow his apiary. He and his wife, Hannah Rae, have moved back to Skandia, where she grew up, and are working towards taking over Cloverland Farm from Hannah's father. This year Isaac is offering mated queens for sale bred from his overwintered bees in Skandia, and Isaac plans to offer overwintered nucs for sale in May of 2020.
The classes will be similar in scope, but we'll be making different kinds of splits at each class.
Here's a description:
Whether it's to slow down the swarming urge, expand your apiary, or prepare for potential winter losses so you can stop buying bees, there are SO many good reasons to make splits from your existing colonies. But there are so many methods of splitting that it can be hard to figure out where to start. In the class, we will do a split together, and I'll also show you:
--Different methods of splitting
--How to make decisions about when and how to split
--How to introduce queens and queen cells
--How to prepare for splitting and what basic equipment you should have
--Why splitting can help your bees and your wallet
We'll make a walk-away split at the May class, and we'll make 6-8 splits from a full sized colony at the June class. There will also be plenty of time for questions and group discussion. Hope to see you there!
Please call Michelle for registration 9062502511

Club meeting---Overwintering
From Michelle
The end of the season is here! The summer sure has been a nice one even though it was slow to get started. By now if you had a hive or few and was lucky to get some excess honey you likely are enjoying it! For the rest of you don't be discouraged especially if this is your first year. Focus on helping them over winter our harsh environments here in the UP.Come join us at the Ore Dock Brewery on Wednesday October 14th at 6pm upstairs. We will have a over wintering discussion and show and tell. If you think you have some methods that you would like to share, please bring them. Joel will be doing a presentation and we will have some visuals of what we use.
Next month we will be having our end of season potluck. It should be fun for all. There will be a honey action. If you have items for the action they would greatly be appreciated.
I know a lot of people are feeding there bees, getting them ready for winter. If you haven't started you may want to consider this. If you do decide to start remember it is a thicker syrup for fall a 2:1 ration sugar to water.
I want to remind everyone that our meeting location is closed to our club and another club that meets at the same time on the opposite end. We still consider our events family friendly so feel free to bring the little ones to learn more.

If you don't have any honey to extract please feel to come by and hang out anyway. It's always great fun and there will be lots of drippy honey to sample. Be the hero of the afternoon and bring biscuits!
For those of you who are extracting honey:
1. Keep your honey warm. Cold honey is slow honey. You can bring your honey to Joel's on Friday to be put in the heated shop for warming.
2. Please get all of the bees off of your frames before you bring them to Joels.
3. Bring jars and lids to put your honey in. Wide mouths work well. (Expect 1 - 1.5 quarts per frame)
4. Bring a small jar to leave some honey for Joel.
5. If you have you own strainng system and bucket, feel frre to bring it. If not, no worries there will be one you can use.
6. If you want to take some of your cappings home bring a bucket or bag to put them in.
Hope to see you all there! My favorite day of the year!

Earth Day Club Event at the Marquette Food Co-op
At our last meeting Joel mentioned that our club would be participating in Earth Day. We are asking all club members to come out to the Marquette Food Co-op to help man our Superior Beekeeping Club booth. If the weather permits we will have a observation hive setup and plenty of handouts. We just need you! We need people to sit at the booth and talk with people about bees. You don't need to be an expert you even can be a first year beekeeper. The event is on Wednesday April 22nd from 9 am to 7pm you can stay as little or as long as you can.
Please call me at 906 250-2511 to sign up for a time slot this will kick off the Marquette Co-Op's "Pollinator Month". Please help out as this is an excellent opportunity to support the club and to support bees by making the community aware of the importance of the honey bee and to learn more about what our club does.

Bee Packages Latest Update
Michelle Landis 10:14 PM
Bees will be in the Manistique approximately at 4pm on Tuesday. I will have Them ready for pick up at my home (in my neighbors garage) at approximately 6pm. These times are only an approximation. I will send an email out as soon as I unload the truck to let everyone know I am indeed back and ready. My address is 1407 State Hwy M28 E, Marquette MI 49855. The bees will be handed out from the garage on the West side of my house. If your car leaks please don't park on the pavers or the concrete. We have 24hrs from the time I pick up the bees to ensure that your queen is viable so you will want to either hive your package in that time frame or check that your queen is alive. If for some reason you do have a dead queen in the package do not open it and bring it back to me. I will have a replacement. If you let her fly away or you open the cage and something happens to her I will have a replacement but there will be a charge. All cages need to be returned by April 19th no later I will be returning the trailer and cages on the 20th. I will not except any cages from previous years. I will not except damaged cages. If you do not return your cage by 10pm on April 19th or your cage is damaged or weathered you will not get your deposit back. If you drop cages off and I am not home put a note in every cage with your name on it. If you don't do this you may be charged a deposit. Do not return the cages with the syrup cans or the queen cages. The syrup makes a terrible mess of my home.

March News from Michelle
Bees
I just got word that if you ordered packaged bees from me they are now expected to be here on April 12th the date can still change a few days before or after. We are still trying to get pushed off to a third truck. So that is still a possibility. Not much of an update but it is something.
I want to encourage people to use the forum on the club page at http://superiorbeekeepingclub.weebly.com/forum.html#
I have had a request that members that are willing to combine order to save on shipping costs or that are going to suppliers to pick up woodenware to make that known in the forum or on the Facebook page. We will be looking to make the Facebook page more club friendly in the next couple months.
Our next meeting will feature an educational piece on splits. There will be time to ask questions and chat with fellow beekeepers. It will be held in the upstairs or the Ore Dock Brewery on April 8th at 6pm.
May meeting will feature Yardening with Mother Earth. (Margaret Gerhardt)
*Summer meeting will be held outdoors and may be scheduled at different times and locations*
