* Saturday Jan. 28 beekeeping 101-- feel free to bring a sack lunch.
** 2017 bee package ordering information See Club page for details After my last post, several readers wanted to see more of the UP winter.Following are several more photos from here in our corner of the UP--Skandia.
It may not look like it, but we are now about 20" below our normal of 85" at this time of year. In the Keweenaw, they are at 120+"--that is real snow! Feel free to send me a winter picture of your corner of the world. When I get a few, I will post them. This is such a great time of the year for reading, working in the shop, off season "bee stuff", toasting by the fire, saunas, enjoying the silence of the writing cabin, family, friends and lively grandkids. All wrapped in white! Due to the weather the Superior Beekeeping Club meeting has been cancelled tonight Jan. 11 at 6:00. Rescheduled for January 24th.
* Welcome to 2017 and a new leaf in our beekeeping journey. Plenty of cold here but lacking in the big snow that I like for insulation. Maybe some of you beekeepers in the Keweenaw or those Munising and east could send some this way. Those couple of warmer days (30's), I had some bees trying to fly- doesn't work at that temp and down they go in the snow. This is pretty normal so not something to worry about.
** Beekeeping 101 Saturday Jan. 28th, 2017 from 10:30-1:30 at the Peter White Public Library. This is Beekeeping basics for the beginner and interested others. This is free of charge and put on by the Superior Beekeeping Club and sponsored by the Marquette Food Co-op. For details go to the club page. *** Plan now for the March 10&11 Michigan Beekeepers Association Conference in East Lansing. The rooms at the Kellogg Center go fast so make reservations early. Other lodging is available but not as convienient. For those that have not attended before, I would encourage you to do so. Great sessions on all aspects of beekeeping, but better yet-700-1000 beekeepers in one place. What a great place to "talk bees". Info will be coming out soon on the MBA website. **** Several of us in the Superior Beekeeping Club are exploring the possibility of an all UP Bee Conference next year-- March of 2018. Please throw any ideas or suggestions our way. ***** Always some new and interesting info on bees. I have been getting the online daily feed from Bee Culture Magazine--usually one or two articles a day to your email--no cost. I have found this a good way to keep updated. ****** For those of you that have been to our small piece of paradise here in the UP and pictures for those that haven't, I am writing this out in the little cabin in the woods. It is variously known as the Hobbitt House, writing cabin, or the pout house. It is 0 degrees and flurries coming down but warm and cozy in here. A "hard life" but someone has to do it! STAY WARM! January 11th meeting and Beekeeping 101 on Sat. January 28th. See the club page for details
