BIRDS AND THE BEES

5/22/2014

Had a nice outing of bird and bee people last week.  It is always great to see the interest people have in two of our planets species that are early detectors of what we are doing to or for our environment.  That both are in trouble should tell us something.

Lon Emerick was able to provide a special treat for the "birders" --- a pair of merlin falcons and their mating ritual display.  For the "bee'rs", I managed to get bees, brood and queen in the observation hive.  A good day for all!

A thank- you for our photos by David Vore

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!!!!

A hummingbird yesterday, maple, willow, blood root, first dandelion, and sun & warm rain - This looks like the real deal!

If you haven't kept track of your area wild flowers, you can print a list from this site.  It would be interesting to compare notes on area micro-climate bloom times. Remember that this is only a good beginning of a listing.  I already have a few more to soon add.

At this time, the bees are really bringing in the pollen and using up sugar syrup.  Comb building and brood raising are proceeding rapidly.  Keep an eye on frames in your initial brood box/deep/2 medians.  When 5-7 frames are filled with brood, pollen, and sugar water/nectar it is time to add another brood box.

Tentatively the Superior Beekeeping Club will host a June 6th hive visit.  A basic what to look for in a hive at this time of year.  It will take place here at my hives.  More coming from Michelle.

BEE BUSTERS

David and Susan Payant have formed a business that removes unwanted bees and will capture swarms.  This will be a great service for Marquette and the surrounding area.  Help spread the word so that, in the future, we might not have our honeybees killed as pests.  Provided with caring beekeepers, they will go on pollinating our food sources and making honey.

THANK-YOU

The bees came to the Marquette area thanks to Michelle Landis's time ,effort, and organizational skill. She was assisted in the early morning pickup by David Payant and Michelle's husband Michael Landis. The bees were in great shape after their journey from California. The Marquette area now has close to an additional one million bees today and by July, if all goes well, over 7 million. That should really help pollinate the gardens and orchards of  Marquette area residents.
Again a big thank-you to Michelle!!!

The bees are here (friday)  SEE CLUB PAGE for details
One last tip for hiving. When spraying sugar water on the bees(prior to hiving) be sure the syrup is warm. In our cool weather,we don't need to start them chilled. if it is below 30, I will spray the frames and use smoke only.

Should the weather prove cool and rainy I may wait for the Sunday PM sunshine to do my hiving. Good luck!!
Contact me with any questions.
