DECEMBER MUSINGS

12/16/2017

* The bees are all tucked in and the snow is with us--what a beautiful wonderland we live in. Today I am getting out of my shop where I have been making Christmas presents and out to the cabin. It was 18 degrees early this morning before I started a fire, by noon it was 76. As you can see from the pictures, it has been a rough day. All of that writing, reading, and looking out the window is really "hard work".

** Planning for the Spring UP Bee Conference continues. A bit more is added to the website as it becomes available--upbeekeepingconference.weebly.com. It is looking like a really nice event is shaping up---mark your calendar Sat. March 31st, 2018.

***Now is a good time to put together some bee reading material for the coming months. A good start and a nice gift to yourself or other beekeepers is either or both of the major bee magazines--"The American Bee Journal" or "Bee Culture". Both of these have great articles and have info on new/old books that are available.

**** For those of you that have seen my video "Why I am a Beekeeper", I am attempting to get some of the pictures I used changed then I can put it in the public domain. I never realized the difficulties of traversing that whole issue. I need to be less technically challenged.

NON BEE PROJECTS
It might not look like it, but I really am involved in non bee endeavors. I am currently working on a couple of projects that I hope to have done by March.
          1. The script has been written and I am now putting together pictures for a historical video called the "Born Cabin". It is a 1870's log cabin on this property that we have/are restoring. I have researched the history and hope I have done the old cabin justice. For the story--stay tuned.
            2. On one melancholy night, I wrote a poem/thingy called "Am I Old?". Maybe just one to many aches that night. A talented musical friend has written music to accompany the reading. She will play it on a 12 string guitar. and my son-in-law will record it. Again, stay tuned.

From all of us here in the Far North Country--Have a wonderful Holiday Season.

I recently receive a question from Gina. For whatever reason, I have not been able to send a reply directly to her. Maybe some of you would be interested also--here goes.

Good morning Gina,

There is no UP source for nucs, queens or packages. That said, you might sporadically find a nuc that someone wants to sell if they split a hive--late spring or early summer. Same goes for queens--there are some that breed some of their own in mid summer and have a couple to spare. Unfortunately, there is no one that does this as a business. Our local club puts in a joint order for packages that usually arrive in the last part of April.  Keep you your eye on the club page for info regarding this process.

KEWEENAW AREA BEEKEEPERS

Sue Peterson is really making an effort to get a group organized for that area. They will be having a meeting at the Carnegie Museum in Houghton Dec. 5th at 6:00. Melissa Hronkin of Algoma Acres will be the speaker--discussing making balms and salves out of beeswax. More details from Sue follow.

Greetings Fellow Beekeepers!

A quick update on our last meeting. We are in the process of applying to be affiliated with the Michigan Beekeeper’s Association. We have renamed our group the Copper Country Beekeepers. Our President is Dave Wiitanen and secretary/treasurer is Sue Peterson (me). The only other requirement we need is to have 10 members. We are short of 10 members and ask that if you haven’t come out to our meetings, please do. As a group we can strive to be more successful and productive beekeepers. Individually we have many ideas and resources, as a group we can combine these resources to be more successful.
Please plan to attend our December 5th meeting at 6:oo. Our guest speaker is Melissa Hronkin from Algohma Acres. Melissa will be demonstrating how to make balms and salves as well as sharing many resources and recipes. Great Christmas ideas!!

Our January meeting has been moved to January 9th, 2018. The tentative topic is “Constructing Hives and components. And I’m sure we will continue to discuss overwintering.
Hope to see many of you at our next meeting!
Sue
