** Some early swarming going on- especially from the stronger overwintered hives. Giving them room will help in prevention, but have equipment ready to catch a swarm.
* Saturday July 1st will be the day of our annual "bee social". Michelle will be putting out the details soon.

* Late April and early May had numerous "no fly" days for the bees. A bit of a set back for a good start that saw great brood production. The pollen is really coming in now and more flowers are blooming-dandelions, june or service berries, marsh marigold, and wintercress. See the wildflower gallery. We still need to keep feeding as "no fly" days will continue and many flowers yet to bloom.
* The Children's Museum of Marquette now has their observation hive up and running- it even has a marked queen. * Recently I did a session for TV6 with Ansley Watson(http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/content/news/Bees-Part-1-Helping-to-keep-the-species-alive-421665813.html). She went right into the hive, even removing her gloves to run a camera--not many news people would do that! For those of you that asked, here is the link to the January interview I did with her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo67z3R0JmA * Thank you David Payant for a great session on mites and their control. It certainly gave me a lot to think about how I am going to manage for mites. Drop me a message at [email protected] to get a copy of David's summary or one of mine on easy splits. |
