The latest batch of flowers in my area of Skandia. There is wide variation in blooming dates (1-7 days) due to our many micro climates in a relative small area. Thank-you Terry Wolf and Justin Dupes for assistance with the hives today. All were fed and brood and patterns examined. Wow they look great! From 4-7 frames of brood in each and lots of comb being drawn. Plenty of pollen coming in - enough for brood rearing and storage. New bees are emerging from the April 15th hiving and the April 24th hiving is right behind. Maybe I should worry this just looks sooooo good. Feel free to leave some comments on how your bees are doing. It helps to get a broad perspective. Once again, I will begin to record the blooming of local wildflowers in my area of Skandia. Last year I started in June and now will fill in the gaps and give us an idea of how we compare to past blooming. Remember there are many micro climates in the area. For example. I saw many dandelions in Marquette but none here yet. Should you pick up on a wrong identification, please let me know. Soon I will have all of the flowers and dates of bloom in a more accessible location. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall - which is it? Our bees just get rolling good and back in the hive they go to wait out another bout of cold weather. Hopefully the bees will "weather" the harsh conditions like they have in the past.
The bees that were hived on April 15th are looking strong. They have about 3 frames of brood and are drawing comb. The April 24th hived packages are up and going also - about 1 1/2 - 2 frames of brood. Most of these bees are being fed honey and sugar syrup. I will replenish the syrup when we hit warm weather - TUES??? Maple trees and pussy willows are providing the current pollen for our hives. I did see a dandelion in Marquette a couple of days ago. Remember to keep feeding and take the time to watch the bees come in with their payloads of pollen. |
