The bees continue to fly about and are now picking up more pollen. Some of the maple trees are flowering--very important early food for bees.
Thank-you to all of the people that turned out last night for the "Queen of the Sun" movie. A powerful statement about bees and people. The movie is available at the Marquette Food Co-op should you wish to view it. They also have the movie "Vanishing of the Bees" for those interested.

For those of you that know I was missing, the trip to Greenbay for eye surgery was successful. Left Monday, back Wednesday in time to see the bees entering the hives with small amounts of pollen--have never seen that this early. Makes me wonder what the 'paybacks" will be for this strange weather pattern. Again, make sure your check the bees for adequate food supplies.
Some beekeepers like all things sweet--its maple syrup time. This year is proving to be very different and not very productive. With 100 trees tapped, we will only make a gallon or two of syrup. The season is pretty much over before it starts. Honey will hopefully fill in the "sweet gap" for 2012.
What a difference ten days makes in UP snow conditions. From digging down, to emergency feed, to wide open. If you haven't checked your bees for food supplies, now would be a good time. Remember one to one sugar water or better yet, honey. A confusing time for our bees ----- warm temps but no nectar or pollen. Last night 75 people attended a Beekeeping 101 class sponsored by the Superior Beekeeping Club and the Marquette Food Co-op. Although hard to fit an introductory beekeeping class into 2 hours people seemed to enjoy not only the knowledge shared but the honey sampling as well! A lot of great questions were asked and bee talk continued well past the two hour mark. Next up is preparing for the arrival of new bee packages and a showing of the movie Queen of the Sun. |
