I am writing this as the snow comes down and the temperature is 12 degrees. Yesterday it was 16 degrees midday, last year it was an "equator like" 69 degrees. This is all pretty normal for January but not November 9th. * A nice MBA Fall Conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan last weekend. Great speakers, all the vendors, and plenty of bee talk. After six very productive years our MBA President Terry Toland has resigned and Sheldon Schwitek has been elected as the new President. Many of you met Terry and his wife Karen when they came to our summer "bee social" several years ago. Terry has been instrumental in promoting UP beekeeping. He deserves a big thank-you from all of us!! ** Upon returning from downstate, my bees were waiting to be put to bed (Nov 7th). The weather has not been very cooperative---I should have done it last week! Thirty degrees and opening hives, not good, but I tried to be quick. The bees were very tolerant of my poor management, and am glad I did it, as it has been nothing but colder since. *** Remember to save the date--March 31, 2018 for the first all UP Beekeeping Conference. It will take many hands to make this work. If you are willing, please send Michelle Landis a message at [email protected] or speak to her at the November club meeting. **** Please check the Superior Beekeepers club page for the latest news & events. -- fall harvest potluck and auction. -- nominations and elections for club officers Hope to see you November 20th. |
