MAY 8TH NOTES

5/8/2018

PictureMuseum bees from the hive to the observation hive.
* After a much delayed spring, the bees are finally hived and out gathering pollen and raising brood. Our 1st pollen source was the tag alders(yellow),  then red maple trees(brownish yellow), sugar maple(light yellow), some of the large poplar trees, and finally some of the pussy willow varieties(lemon yellow). Pollen color is effected by sunlight, rain and temperature, so there will be subtle changes day to day. Check out the short video of my bees entering the Hive House loaded with pollen.
** Feeding is very important at this point and will continue until June--all depends on the weather and floral sources. The bees will usually let you know that they don't need feeding by gradually (occasionally abruptly) not taking the sugar water. In our climate, better to error on the side of feeding to long rather than stopping to soon.
*** The Children's Museum's hive is back up and running for the year. After last year's pesticide kill of the hive, hopefully there will be no more issues this year.

***** Check the Club page for the next meeting information.
****** We will be doing our annual "Bee Social" here sometime in June--details to come.

Needed a picture of my equipment shed. I can actually walk in there--won't last long.
