A great day of removing the surplus honey our bees have produced. 40+ bee people came to extract or just watch the process.Lots of kids around helping out and sampling the honey.

Honey extraction 12:00 to 7:30 tomorrow at my house. See Bee Club page.for more details and directions. You are more than welcome to just come watch the process and talk "bee stuff".
A nice meeting of 30+ bee people. Some hands on work for those that wanted and good viewing for those that didn't.
Some pictures here and more to come in video/photo section tomorrow. THANKS to all of you that came and shared your bee experiences---it makes all of us better stewards of our bees. The fall asters are beginning to bloom. Pictured are both the white and lavender asters
Remember the "pre-extraction" meeting at 6:00. This will take place at my house. Bring a bee suit if you want to get hands on. The focus will be on getting the bees off the frames for a beeless extraction of your honey. Click on the bee club for details. We will be extracting at my house on Tuesday August 28th from noon till finish. Bring your warm and "beeless" frames or if you have none, come to watch/participate. Click on Superior Bee Club for details.
First swarm landed in a nearby tree. I guess my bees didn't like me being gone a few days. Just got home and 3 hours later I had a large swarm. I know many of you have heard me say how lucky I've been with no swarms this year. I should have known better. This hive had lots of room and lots of bees. Hindsight says I should have made a split in the spring--I should be pleased that they were healthy and very strong. Oh well, I captured the swarm!!!!! A couple of pictures here and lots more on the photo page. My son-in-law and new father, John is the other guy in the bee suit. My daughter Cassandra is taking pictures and my 4 year old grandson Hale is supervising. After capturing the swarm, they left the new hive (a top bar) and returned to the bottom of the bench at the original site. I'm sure that I missed the queen the 1st time. Rehived them as shown and as of this writing am waiting to see if they stay put. As a note of interest ,this is about 6-9 pounds of bees which is worth $160 to $230. There will be a few more flowers blooming soon. The sweet clover is starting to run down but still a great flow going on.
Been busy here with a new Granddaughter being born and now a trip downstate for a family reunion. The bees are supered and should be ok until I return next week. Keep and eye on those supers and watch the availability of water. |
