BEE SOCIAL EVENT

6/21/2015

Good food, mead,no rain, mosquitoes somewhat at bay,and a lot of bee talk--what more could a beekeeper want?!!
A nice turnout(40+) for the event and the weather decided to cooperate by ceasing to rain just before the hive inspections. Thank-you to Michigan Beekeepers Association's president Terry Toland and his wife Karen for joining us. It was appreciated that the MBA is interested in UP beekeeping.
Thanks go to Terry and David Payant for leading the groups in hive inspections. It was good to have everyone get to see the wonders of the hive's inner workings. Nice to have long-time beekeeper Tom Nebel here to provide commentary on the many questions that were asked.

Pictures of the event may be seen here with more to come later.   /beekeeping-photos.html

EARLY JUNE NOTES

6/7/2015

Raining this morning after a sunny day yesterday that had a chilly start. The  package bees are making a rapid buildup this year - the wildflowers are all about 1-2 weeks earlier than the last two years. Friday, my daughter Cassandra and I made some splits and installed a couple of nucs from Tom Nebel. Just as we finished, two bald eagles soared at tree top level over our clearing. They surveyed our work and declared it good. What an omen!!

Be sure to stay ahead of the buildup by adding additional boxes on your original deep or medium. I now have a deep and medium on mine. I am still feeding and will continue until they start slowing down on their own--often mid to late June.

Your "weather dance" should be about bringing sun, light breezes, 60-80's,and night rains to bring about our bee utopia.
